Nick Brokeshoulder – Stacked Kookoyemsim or Mudheads

Carvers rarely make stacked katsinam as they’re hard to execute. Nick Brokeshoulder did a superb job with this example. This piece is 16″ tall and 3 1/2″ wide. The position of the upper Kooyemsi on the shoulders of the lower figure is very realistic. The carving is signed on the foot with Nick’s initials, clan sign, and a variant of the plural word for Kooyemsi: Koyemsit. This carving may be a rendering of a paralyzed katsina being carried by his friend or just an example of Kooyemsi shenanigans. Nick is the father of noted carvers, Randy and Brent Brokeshoulder.
