This is a minimalist version of the seldom seen Sivutotovi, often called Sivu by noted carver, Larry Melendez. As katsina carver, Max Curley, told me, “Sivu is a foot racer who smears stove pipe soot on the people who are not fortunate enough to outrun him.” Max added, “It is also said he resembles a fly.” This katsina is 8 3/4″ tall. Larry Melendez is one the featured carvers in Jonathan Day’s book, “Traditional Hopi Kachinas” (2000). There is some slight wear to the paint on the back of his loin cloth but the front is perfect. Signed on the feet with, “LEM” and Larry’s Butterfly Clan symbol.
