On one of John Stobart’s visits to Venice he found this superb composition of the Rio Di Caterina. The essence of the view is the brick wall to the left with a stately entrance in the afternoon sun. As a perfect balance, the buildings to the right in shadow stretching some quarter mile down the Rio Di Caterina looking truly magnificent. Then, at the lower right, a real architectural gem, a characterful old stone doorway with an iron grille, and leading to it, a narrow stone pathway.
