Jim Fred was one of the most accomplished Hopi carvers in the 1980s-90s. He was in the vanguard of the movement towards ultra-realism. His work was featured on the cover of American Indian Art magazine. This carving comes from the 1980s as he was still using acrylic paints. By the 90s, he had switched primarily to wood stains. The larger kneeling Kooyemsi is 10″ tall to the top of his rattle. The smaller is 4 3/4″ including the box with Hopi cloud design on which he is standing. The large Kooyemsi has a repaired break on his left arm as shown in the photo.
