Description Mitchell Zephier, an enrolled member of the Lower Brule Lakota tribe, begins creating jewelry in the early 1970s. Mitchell Zephier of Rapid City, South Dakota grows up on the Cheyenne River and Rosebud Indian reservations. He has also earns the South Dakota Governor’s award. Mitch wins numerous awards including first place at Red Earth Show, several awards at the internationally prestigious Sante Fe Indian Market His first teacher, Frank Standing High, teaches him the basics of cutting and shaping metal at a summer program at Dartmouth College, and later he apprentices with his aunt, a Zuni jeweler who teaches him inlay techniques. He designs jewelry in German silver, brass, and copper often inlaid with crushed materials such as pipestone, alabaster, lapis, or malachite mixed with epoxy as a holding agent.
